Your in Control
Listen up credit card holders...there's some new rules going into effect. Starting February 2010....YOU the consumer will be the main beneficiary. What does this mean? Turns out there is an end to the horrors of notices saying your payment is due the next day or you are going to be forced to deal with an outstanding late fee. Credit card companies will find a way to get their money, BUT find out why banks won’t just be able to raise your rates when we return.
Great news....now credit card companies wont be raising your interest rates unless you have been at least 60 days late on a payment....phew....but careful, turns out that banks are working overtime to find ways to make up for there lost revenue. So what can you do? Each month make your payments.....pay as much as possible...but at all cost avoid late payments…no one wants to pay more then they have to right? I know I don’t. Will the Bill Pass?
OK...so I know this whole Health care bill is confusing...but it appears President Obama has a new and different start to passing the bill. Obama's new plan would allow the government to limit the rate increases from insurance companies...Not bad. Problem is that to pass the bill congress needs to pass the health legislation first.... not likely. After calling on Congress to pass the bill...Obama has decided to take a different approach...to create a plan of his own. Hmm! Find out what the new approach entails when we return.
So how does Obama plan to get the Health care Bill approved by both the Senate and the House....well by using legislation already passed by the Senate....and then making the necessary changes to appeal to the House of Representatives. Another point that Obama wants to add to the Health Care Bill is that everyone be insured and those not insured will be forced to pay a fine. So with new fines and limited rate increases...whether you agree or not, truth is...the Universal Health Care Bill won't be an issue until it’s passed. I’m Melanie Fernandez....my RDC News Update.
History not over yet
Listen up parents....does your child hate the thought of memorizing dates and studying American history? Turns out that if the Department of Public Instruction gets their way…high school seniors will be forced to take on one more year of history before graduating. Today, students moving on to college are not fully prepared. While some debate whether to start history at a younger age like middle school.... the vote overwhelmingly pushed for 12th graders to take on one more year of history. Hmm, sounds like fun. Find out why the new change after these messages.
Students are not learning enough about what’s happening in the world and state officials are making changes. John Dornan with the Public School Forum of North Carolina said that history teachers are expected to cover so much....centuries of history in just semesters....and too much information is left out. Dornan says children need to constantly keep enriching there minds and taking a year or two off history will cause the information they gain to go through one ear and out the other. Knowledge is power, isn’t it? I’m Melanie Fernandez my RDC News Update.
Snow to blame
So we've all driven on I-40 from time to time. But what if the part of 40 you take to work each day was still closed....over a month later? For some people in the western part of the state....a segment of 40 that was closed in October due to a rockslide will not be open until “late” April....you heard me....that’s over 5 months. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has established a detour that many say is just an inconvenience. Isn’t a rock slide an inconvenience? Find out what caused the rockslide after these messages.
Wintery weather in October is to blame for the rockslide in western North Carolina. But why has it taken so long to reopen the roads? Turns out that 25 inches of snow has fallen in that area of the state between December and February. Snow mixed with over 17 inches of rain has contributed to poor conditions stopping NC DOT from getting the road fixed. It will take time to remove the rocks and to insure that the mountains are safe before opening that stretch of I-40. So drivers, get used to the detour....there’s no telling if winter weather will delay construction efforts even more. I’m Melanie Fernandez My RDC News update.
New Precautions
Are you a hunter? How about a waterfowl hunter? If so listen up. The N.C Wildlife Resources Commission is implementing new rules to keep you safe. Statistics show that more hunters die each year not from gun shots wounds, but believe it or not, from drowning and hypothermia........you heard me. A new statewide campaign called Home from the Hunt encourages hunters to have fun, BUT be safe. Find out what precautions you can take next time you go hunting.
Next time you go waterfowl hunting here are some helpful tips to take with you. Never overload the boat, always wear a life vest, and don’t move around the boat with a loaded firearm. Really? If the boat does capsize officials warn against trying to swim to shore....If the boat is still floating, just stick with it…it can provide temporary safety. Lastly, always let someone know where you are and when you will be returning. The North Carolina Wildlife Commission says they want nothing more than for there hunters to have fun and be safe.
